About

Vision of Success project

What is it?

"Visions of Success" is a photographic exhibit dedicated to showcasing the achievements of Somali professionals in the United States. This initiative seeks to illuminate the potential pathways to success for recent Somali immigrants who often find themselves navigating the complexities of a new cultural environment while settling for low-income, non-skilled jobs out of necessity, while respectable, they may not fully utilize their potential or offer a long term growth. Also an inspiration to our youth who are just finishing up high school and going through the process of navigating through the selection of a career, and showing them some real life examples of individuals just like them and the success they achieved in their careers.

Purpose and Inspiration:

Mainly to start the conversation about education and careers, in the hopes that it would become a subject that is showcased and talked about more often in our community, and also many young Somali immigrants are unaware of the diverse career opportunities available to them beyond the immediate job options that provide a quick start, but limited prospects for advancement. This exhibit aims to bridge this gap by highlighting the stories of Somali individuals who have established successful professional careers across various fields. By presenting these stories, we intend to inspire and motivate our youth to consider the broader possibilities for their futures.

Exhibit Features:

Each featured individual is represented through two contrasting photographic portraits: one in casual attire, reflecting their personal and cultural identity, and another in professional attire, symbolizing their role and achievements in their chosen careers. This dual portrayal not only celebrates their professional accomplishments but also emphasizes their connection to the Somali cultural heritage.

Goals:

The overarching goal of "Visions of Success" is to challenge and expand the perspectives of our youth, encouraging them to aspire beyond immediate short-term employment options. It aims to demonstrate that with determination and education, achieving a fulfilling and respected professional career is within reach. This exhibit is not merely a showcase of success but a call to action for our community to embrace the values of education and ambition. It serves as a testament to the resilience and potential of our people and as a beacon of hope for future generations. For more information about the exhibit or how you can support this cause, please contact us at contactme@fatahmusedotcom. We look forward to sharing these inspiring stories with you and believe that together, we can foster a community of aspiration and achievement.

We're deep into the most meticulous phase of our project, where I carefully review each photograph to select the perfect image for enlargement and printing. It’s a thrilling walk down memory lane, reflecting on the vibrant days spent together in the studio and the creative decisions we made.

In this exciting phase, I focus on several key aspects of each image—not necessarily in order of importance, but all crucial. I look for excellent lighting, engaging facial expressions, the right pose, overall composition, and ensure there are no wardrobe malfunctions.

One of the highlights of this phase is reconnecting with you. I'll be sharing a selection of the poses that didn’t make the final cut—these have been cleaned and edited for your personal use. Additionally, I’ll reach out to get your feedback on the chosen image for printing. Your input is invaluable, as I want to ensure the photo we present at the exhibit perfectly reflects your satisfaction.

Soon, I hope to bring you exciting news about the printing of our photobook and, circumstances permitting, share it with you as well.

A special thanks to my friend Tariq Tarey, whose insightful feedback and constructive criticism have been immensely helpful in this phase. His expertise is adding immeasurable value to our project.

    Thank You.

Here’s an update on what’s happening: Each photoshoot brought unique stories to light, offering us a chance to bond and enjoy the process, sometimes welcoming two or participants a week!

We kicked off our first photoshoot with Ahmed Aato and Abdirashid Dahir on Sunday, May 26th, and I must say, the highlight of the whole photoshoot process at the studio was getting to know each of you personally. The conversations we had, hearing about your journeys and ambitions, truly inspired me. It brought back memories of when I first started my own career after graduating from Franklin University with a degree in Computer Science. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to connect with all of you, and I’m genuinely excited to watch as your careers flourish and see all the incredible things you will accomplish, InshaAllah.

I want to give a huge thank you to my brother and studio partner, Tariq Tarey, who is not only a refugee advocate but also an incredible visual ethnographer, documentary photographer, and advisor. His expertise and insights have been invaluable to this project, always offering the perfect suggestions and support when needed. I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as both a studio partner and as a guiding force, keeping me focused on the true mission and purpose of the Vision of Success project.

    Thank You.

Here’s an update on what’s happening: Our journey began with personal conversations around town, engaging potential participants and securing their commitment through direct, heartfelt discussions..

In this phase of the project, I could not have started without the invaluable support of Engineer Mohamed Farahand Ifrah Udgoon. You were the first individuals I shared this idea with, and I am truly fortunate that you both embraced the vision and agreed to be part of it. Your help in connecting me with other young professionals has been instrumental. You are the pillars of this project's success, and it would not have been possible without your dedication and unwavering support.

I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of the participants who embraced the Vision of Success project with enthusiasm and agreed to be a part of it. Your excitement and commitment have been a constant source of encouragement, inspiring me to expand the project's reach and reinforcing the significance of its mission. Each of you plays a crucial role in its success, and your involvement has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

    Thank You.
